Queensland Smoke Alarm Legislation
The Queensland Government has introduced comprehensive smoke alarm legislation to improve home safety and reduce the risk of fire-related injuries and fatalities. As of January 1, 2017, new regulations stipulate the following requirements:

01. All Homes Built or Significantly Renovated

Smoke alarms must be photoelectric (AS 3786-2014 compliant).

Smoke alarms must be interconnected, so when one alarm is activated, all alarms sound.

Smoke alarms must be installed in each bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the dwelling, and on every level of the home.
02. All Rental Properties and Sold Homes

From January 1, 2022, all rental properties and homes being sold must comply with the same smoke alarm requirements as new homes and renovations.
03. All Domestic Dwellings

By January 1, 2027, all existing domestic dwellings must meet the new smoke alarm standards.
